Who would believe that a delicatessen could bring so much fanfare and fun to Denver diners? It’s true if you head over to Masterpiece Delicatessen. It’s in a red building -- you won’t miss it, small with huge windows, a few tables inside and a great patio. You’ll find cases of food from which to choose and some fun groceries on shelves along the wall. The kitchen is in full view and that’s where it all starts. Justin Brunson and Steve Allee, great chefs in gourmet restaurants, decided the way to go was just casual fare with super sandwiches, salads and desserts. Add staff from many of Denver’s popular spots that cook and serve, and the plan is set. Just try to decide what to order: gourmet grilled cheese with add-ons of applewood smoked bacon, marinated tomato or onion, or sautéed wild mushrooms. Sounds divine, but wait, there’s so much more. Black truffle egg salad, smoked turkey with pears and arugula, a to die for Reuben with house made corned beef, Italian filled with your favorite meats, the Cubano, 12-hour braised beef brisket, wild ahi tuna, and roasted vegetable. Pick your bread, then add sides of pasta salad (yes, made here), or potato or veggie chips. Don’t miss a cup of soup or the array of salads from arugula, spinach, Cobb, and Greek. Breakfast is a meal not to pass up when you can indulge in house cured gravlox, egg sandwiches, pork roll with eggs, and oatmeal, muffins and yogurt. The desserts include flourless chocolate cake, warm rhubarb crisp, lemon honey panna cotta and tres leches. Yes, these, too, are prepared by the chefs. Lots of great coffee drinks, smoothies, juice and more complement the food. There’s not much more to say, other than Masterpiece Delicatessen rocks and is the most popular new addition in town. Oh yes, we’ll see you there.
