Remember the line, “Save it, it will come back in style?”. Head for Baur’s and you will see how true it is. The original sign is out in front of what was the first Baur’s lighting up the block in all its glory. Inside the black and white tile floor is redone, the crystal chandelier shines again and old pictures adorn the walls. If you have been around for a while, it will all look familiar. The place is beautifully done with a gorgeous wood bar, elegant New Yorkish décor as found in the upscale restaurants there, soft light, lovely linens, china and accompaniments and an elegant feel not often seen. Owner Jimmy Lambatos has done a great job and thought of every detail, including the hiring of Executive Chef Corey Cunningham from Michael Mina’s restaurants in San Francisco. The menu is not the Baur’s fare, but eclectic, contemporary great food. Start with warm bread and the changing nightly amuse. The grilled calamari or sausage stuffed mushrooms might be the first treat of the night. Small plates are a feature to share and enjoy and they shine. Grilled skewered lamb with yogurt salad, amazing stuffed artichokes filled with potato, almond and fresh herbs, beef carpaccio, mozzarella en carozza, oven roasted stuffed peppers with cheese, and prosciutto are great to see, better to eat and enjoy. Several salads include Caprese, a Mediterranean wedge and the house. Wild salmon with mushrooms, herb chicken roulade with risotto, lamb chops with creamy polenta, a filet mignon and parmesan crusted veal start the entrée list. Pasta with pancetta and smoked mozzarella, linguini with shell fish and fusilli with arugula, tomatoes and Asiago cream sauce bring more treats. Leave room for desserts that include butterscotch pudding with caramel sauce, chocolate praline torte, olive oil and sweet wine cake and gelatos. The wine list and service are excellent. The location is perfect for dining before or after theater, the private party room is fabulous, or just for a night for relaxation. And it all gets down to “everything old is new again”---and in this case, better than ever.
