Conventioneers with hefty expense accounts will enjoy Altitude, the sleek restaurant located within the Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center. The open-spaced venue features the cool tones of stone and spectacular windows that overlook the plaza at the Convention Center. Diners can comfortably watch Blue Bear peek into the Convention Center. Breakfast comes in two forms: a buffet or by the menu. Service begins at 6 a.m. and is available until 3 p.m. Lunch is also served. At 3 the restaurant closes and reopens for dinner at 5:30 and closes at 10 p.m. This is a restaurant that caters to the out-of-towner as well as locals. Dinner can be quite a treat at Altitude. For starters, try the tortilla soup or the baked crab mac and cheese. The Caesar salad features luscious white anchovies and a perfectly toasted crouton. The 7-ounce grilled filet tops an herb potato rosti, on a bed of chanterelle mushrooms and a Gorgonzola cream sauce is simply delicious, beautifully presented and treats the palate to a series of complex, lingering tastes. Pan-roasted halibut is nicely prepared and served with shitake mushrooms, spinach sauté, smoked bacon, red and yellow peppers and lemon jus. Other entrées offer an interesting mix for diners. The hungry visitor from Montana can happily enjoy a 20-ounce grilled cowboy rib eye or the bison tenderloin served with grilled plum marmalade, Boursin potato and a huckleberry port sauce. Or try the seared duck breast with white truffle gnocchi, roasted figs and fig jus. Wines are diverse and represent a rather pleasant selection from numerous countries and areas of California. The wine list is neither overwhelming nor pretentious and is well priced. Dessert features a different crème brûlée daily. Try the cranberry and pear tart in a crispy, buttery crust. The setting is comfortable, and the people and "bear watching" good. |
